CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEAS

The Overarching Theme: Nostalgic Christmas

Now I would say the overarching theme for all of the holiday decorating this year is nostalgic Christmas. That encompasses a ton of things, but it’s really about going traditional and classic for your holiday decorating this year. I think there’s been a ton of years of going super neutral and bringing in untraditional colors and ways of decorating, but this year it’s really coming back to the roots of holiday decor and it’s actually really exciting. Think classic plaids, classic traditional red and green colors, a lot of Santa Claus elements, and even tinsel.

You’re going to notice all of these decor trends in every holiday decor store right now, but you can also get this look by thrifting your holiday decor. So if you’re looking for a budget-friendly way of really creating that nostalgic Christmas look in your home, that is the first place you should look if you’re looking for budget-friendly pieces.

And that might be throw pillows that have Santa Claus on them and sayings, and it’s kind of about being cheesy in a way to just bring out that nostalgic Christmas feeling around your home. You can gather a lot of inspiration by watching Christmas movies and seeing how all of those homes are decorated, kind of leaning into that feeling.

Color Palette: Deep Reds, Greens, and Blues

Now, when we’re thinking about the color palette for the holidays, we are sticking with the traditional red and green color palettes, but we are kind of deepening them into more of a jewel-tone moody tone to stick with those traditional colors but kind of modernize it and make it look really elegant as well. So instead of going with this bright red, we’re bringing it down to a little bit more of that burgundy color, that red wine color, and that’s how you’re going to incorporate those traditional color palettes in a little bit more of a modern elegant way.

So if you love the traditional holiday color palette but really want to elevate it a little bit more, stay away from the saturated colors and lean more into those deep reds, deep greens, and deep blues.

Berry Trends: Traditional with a Modern Twist

A very traditional holiday decor detail has always been berriesβ€”red berriesβ€”but this year it’s going to be on another level. You’re going to see berry garland, berry stems, berry pics for your trees, and berry wreaths. You’re going to see berries everywhere. I’m already noticing it in home decor stores. A lot of the holiday decor right now has incorporated berries. I think it’s such a traditional timeless thing that you can incorporate into your home that yes, is on trend this year, but it’s also just a timeless element that you can incorporate every single year. You can use them in a small way, maybe with your table settings and your napkins.

You can tuck little berries in there. You can stick pics in your Christmas tree to add really interesting detail, and incorporating berry picks into your garland on your staircase and your fireplace will go such a long way. So if you’re looking for this on-trend but also traditional thing you can do for your holiday decor this year, it’s introduced more berries throughout your entire home. Now, you can go traditional with the bright red berries or you can tone it down and go for a little bit more of that moody dark burgundy berry that looks super elegant as well.

Gold Accents: Timeless and Regal

Now, there’s always a trending metal when it comes to holiday decor. It could be silver or it could be gold, and this year it’s all about gold. You can use gold holiday decor all around your home, and it’s going to be on trend this year, but it’s also going to be classic and timeless. It’s something you can put out every single year and it will stand the test of time. Think about gold tree ornaments, gold bells, gold stocking hangers, gold or brass candlestick holders, and even gold to set your table with.

So you can use gold all around your home to really bring in that warmth and regal feeling throughout your home. You can incorporate this gold trend in a large way or a small way around your home, but it’s definitely something that’s going to be on trend this year to create that classic nostalgic look.

Velvet: Soft and Elegant Holiday Touch

Now, this is something that was really trending last year but it’s still hot for 2024, and it’s velvet. You’re going to see velvet everywhere, and I think the easiest way to incorporate velvet into your holiday decor is with bows and ribbons. The ribbon is such an easy thing to get a hold of on Amazon at your craft store, but the velvet rolls sell out quickly, so the ribbon aisles might be filled, but the velvet ones specifically go super fast. So if you want to have this on-trend piece this year, definitely get a hold of all of your velvet pieces sooner rather than later.

Another easy way of incorporating velvet into your tree decor is with velvet ornaments. Velvet ornaments flew off the shelf last year and they’re flying off the shelf this year as well because they are so on-trend. They add such a soft elegant look to your Christmas tree and again, they’re coming in those moody kind of deep color palettes that look absolutely stunning. So instead of having shiny sparkly holiday decor this year, it’s all about velvet soft textures that are really going to give you that elegant look. So incorporate velvet wherever you can. If you can get your hands on some velvet this holiday season, you’re a lucky one.

Bows: DIY Friendly and Festive

Now, one of my favorite holiday decor trends that was trending last year but it’s also trending this year are bows. You’re going to see bows everywhere, and bows are the easiest thing to use around your home to decorate for the holidays because it’s super DIY-friendly, it’s super affordable, and you can pretty much tie a bow on anything and it looks like your home is ready for the holiday. So I wrap bows around my lamps, I wrap bows all over my Christmas tree. You can even use a bow as a tree topper.

You can use bows everywhere. I actually just recently figured out how to make a bow napkin tie that adds such a special touch to your dinner table. So you can incorporate bows all around your home in every way, and you’re definitely going to be on trend this year. Again, if you’re not even putting up a Christmas tree, if you don’t want to go crazy with your garland, at least tie a few bows on elements around your home and it will look festive and classic for the holidays.

Down-Swept Christmas Trees: Cozy and Unique

Now, a Christmas tree trend that I noticed a lot last year that’s still sticking around this year is down-swept Christmas trees. These are kind of those drooping trees, so instead of your stems coming out and up, these stems are going down so they look like they’re weighted. A lot of the time, they’re flocked to make it look like the snow is kind of weighing down the branches. You get this really droopy look, which is completely a different style. I think it really gives off this cozy feeling because there’s something kind of cute about them.

I don’t know, the down-swept Christmas trees are very much their own kind of style and I actually think they look amazing undecorated. So if you want to have just a minimal Christmas, you can add a lot of style to your home by going with down-swept Christmas trees. It’s definitely not for everyone, but you’re going to see a lot more of them this year. If you don’t want to incorporate this trend largely with your main Christmas tree, you can think about getting little down-swept Christmas trees just to decorate around your home and introduce that style into your space.

Let me know down below in the comments what you guys think about those down-swept Christmas trees.

Brown: The New Neutral for Holiday Decor

Now, a color that’s also trending for holiday decor this year is brown, and brown is also trending in home decor in general. So this is a perfect way of just incorporating that color that you might have around your home into your holiday decor. I think it’s a great neutral and it also gives off those moody dark tones that are trending, so it really is a mix of both.

So having brown ornaments, and incorporating velvet with brown, it all looks amazing, and it really gives you this warm cozy feeling when it comes to your holiday decor. So it’s kind of a modern neutral, but also super classic. If you’re someone who likes to keep your holiday decor very neutral and creamy, adding this brown will really bring in that depth, and it’s another neutral that would look great with your existing decor.

Gold Frames: Personalized and Elegant Touches

Another thing that I’m noticing this year is a lot of gold framesβ€”gold frames for your tree ornaments so you can personalize photos inside and really customize your tree. I’m just seeing gold frames everywhere, and I think it’s such a beautiful way of decorating for the holidays. You can really bring out that personalized touch by incorporating frames like this around your home. I think this really gives off this homey, loving feeling around your space, and having photos like that incorporated into your holiday decor really creates a conversation starter.

So if you’re hosting for the holidays, if you’re hosting a holiday party, this would be a great thing to add to your home so that you can have memories and photos of friends and family together to start a conversation. I think it’s such a beautiful touch. Now, this does require you to print out photos, which I know a ton of us don’t spend time doing, but if you have iPhone photos, you can easily print those at your local Walmart, or CVS, you can do it pretty much anywhere and get your hands on hard copies same day.

Multiple Christmas Trees: A Fun and Festive Trend

Another Christmas tree trend is actually having multiple Christmas trees. Now, I love having multiple Christmas trees. I love having my main tree and then using smaller trees in the main areas that I’m going to be in. So this is great for those homes that are not open-concept. Maybe you want a tree in your dining room and you also want one in your living room. You can use multiple trees around your home, but another trend is actually grouping those trees together to create kind of like a group of three Christmas trees in different sizes.

It’s really fun. Again, it doesn’t have to be super expensive using all-new Christmas trees. You can thrift Christmas trees for a steal. You can do this in a very small way, even with mini Christmas trees around your home. If you’re decorating your shelves and any kind of surfaces, just grouping multiple Christmas trees together in different sizes can definitely do the trick, and it’s a way to kind of introduce that style into your home.

Christmas trees are the best part of holiday decorating, and I love a twinkling tree in a corner of a space.
