Lady Doesn’t Like That Mom Redecorated Her Lounge While She Delivered Baby, Parents Are Angry With Her

When I was a teenager, I asked my mom to buy me a jersey of my favorite football team from a sportswear store, using my own savings. Unfortunately, I was sick and couldn’t go with her. When she returned, she told me she’d seen the jersey I wanted but didn’t like its colors. Instead, she bought me one she thought was “prettier.” To my surprise, it was a jersey from my team’s archrival!

The point I’m trying to make is that, even with the best intentions, our parents’ efforts to help us sometimes miss the mark. And when we don’t show excitement or gratitude for their “help,” they can end up feeling offended. This happened to Blubstering’s mother, the author of today’s story.

The mom texted back soon after expecting praise but got incredibly offended when the author told her she wasn’t happy at all

The Original Poster (OP) shares that she recently gave birth, and both she and the baby had to stay in the hospital due to some unexpected health issues. During this time, her husband stayed by her side, while her mother volunteered to help out at home, mainly with cleaning. Once both mother and baby were healthy, they returned home to a big surprise.

It turns out that, in their absence, the OP’s mom had repainted the living room walls. The original soft taupe and off-white walls, which the OP felt perfectly complemented their oak furniture, were now two walls painted in a mid-gray and the other two in a bold royal purple. But the real issue wasn’t just the color—it was the poor quality of the paint job.

The walls were streaked in several places, the window frames were splattered with paint, and some corners had uneven coverage. To her credit, the OP didn’t say anything to her mother right away. Instead, she simply claimed she was exhausted. Her mom, picking up on this, left. Only then did the OP break down in tears, feeling helpless.

Later, the mother sent a text, clearly expecting praise for her efforts. When the OP gently suggested she didn’t like the colors, the mother was deeply offended. The OP’s father then got involved, accusing her of upsetting her mom. Now, the OP is stuck with hastily painted walls in bright colors and no communication with her parents.

“Unfortunately, some parents feel entitled to overstep their adult children’s personal boundaries, often masking it as a genuine desire to help,” says Maria Kryvosheeva, a psychologist and NLP coach who spoke with Bored Panda for a comment. “These unsolicited ‘acts of help’ should be addressed and discouraged whenever possible.”

“In my opinion, the woman should have immediately told her mother she was unhappy with the unasked-for repairs, especially since they were poorly done and unprofessional. I understand that she was exhausted after giving birth and dealing with health issues, but her parents’ behavior was inappropriate.”

“Once she feels well enough and able to have a serious conversation, the author should explain to her parents that their actions were unacceptable. She should also request compensation or at least an apology. If not, they’ll likely continue to violate her privacy, as this is a fairly typical scenario,” Maria concludes.

As for the comments, people were shocked by the mother’s intrusive behavior. The OP received widespread support, with most responders suggesting she should have set clear boundaries with her parents right away. “Paint it back and send her the bill,” one commenter wisely advised. What do you think, dear readers?
