Decorating Tips to Make Your Home Look Luxurious

1. Layering Window Treatments

Let’s talk about window treatments because everyone has windows in their home, large or small, and window treatments can make or break your space. They can also be the thing that adds a luxurious touch and feel to a space instantly. So, one thing that I think you should consider doing to add this luxe feeling in your space is actually layering window treatments, using more than one type of window treatment on one single window.

You’ll notice this done all the time in high-end hotel design and high-end residential design. As soon as you hang your drapes high and wide from your window, your space is going to look large and tall, and it’s going to frame out your window really nicely and add this soft, luxurious touch.

But you may not want to be opening and closing your curtains every day for privacy, so having this second treatment that’s actually the more functional treatment on your window is going to work wonders. So these two different window treatments serve two different purposes: functionality and style. You can layer your curtains with Roman shades, roller blinds, or wood blinds, or you could even layer them with a sheer drape so that you have light filtering and privacy, as well as maybe a blackout feature with the curtain. I’ve done this in my living room because these windows are used every single day, and I wanted functionality and design to be considered.

I layered a light-coloured roller shade so that we can have privacy but also light diffusion in here, as well as heavy drapes that are hung high and wide to make the space feel taller and more luxurious. This combination of function and style really elevates the space and adds that designer touch.

2. Use Lighting to Elevate Your Space

Now, moving on to tip number two, let’s talk about lighting. Lighting can truly transform a space and elevate the ambience in your home. A well-lit room not only looks inviting but can also highlight key design features in the room, making it appear more luxurious. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is by layering your lighting sources—using a combination of overhead lights, task lighting, and accent lighting.

Consider investing in statement light fixtures such as chandeliers or pendant lights for key areas like the dining room or entryway. These can become focal points in the room and instantly add that high-end, designer look. Additionally, incorporating dimmers into your lighting system can help create a soft, warm glow when you want a cosy, luxurious atmosphere, and bright lighting when you need it for tasks like reading or cooking.

Another lighting tip is to make use of floor and table lamps. Opt for lamps with elegant designs and high-quality materials such as glass, metal, or marble. This will give the room a polished, sophisticated feel without the need for expensive renovations. Finally, don’t forget the power of natural light—keep your windows clean and unobstructed to allow as much light into your space as possible. A room filled with natural light always feels more open and luxurious.

3. Incorporate High-Quality Textiles and Fabrics

Next up is tip number three: incorporating high-quality textiles and fabrics. The materials you choose for your furniture and accessories can make a huge difference in how luxurious a room feels. Opt for fabrics that feel rich and sophisticated, such as velvet, linen, wool, or silk. These materials not only look expensive, but they also feel indulgent to the touch.

For example, consider swapping out a basic cotton throw pillow for one in velvet or silk—immediately, the room will feel more polished and high-end. When choosing upholstery for furniture, look for fabrics that have a high thread count or a rich texture. Leather is another great option for creating a high-end look, especially when paired with clean, modern lines.

Another great way to elevate your space is by layering textiles. Think about adding area rugs, throws, and decorative pillows to create depth and warmth. A plush area rug can instantly make a room feel more expensive, especially if you opt for a large size and high-quality material like wool or a cotton blend.

When styling your bed or sofa, be mindful of how you arrange the textiles. Layering different textures—like a soft throw blanket over a luxurious duvet or a few decorative pillows on a couch—can help create a more curated, designer look. The key is to choose fabrics that complement each other and enhance the overall color scheme of the room.

4. Add Art and Wall Decor

Now, moving on to tip number four: adding art and wall decor. One of the easiest and most impactful ways to transform a space is by incorporating beautiful art and wall decorations. Wall art adds personality, and sophistication, and can really elevate a room’s overall aesthetic. When choosing art for your home, look for pieces that resonate with you and reflect your personal style, but also consider the space you’re decorating.

To achieve a more luxurious look, opt for framed artwork or large prints rather than posters or inexpensive prints. High-quality frames in materials like wood, gold, or black metal can instantly make even more affordable art feel like a high-end investment. If you’re on a budget, consider purchasing art from local artists or online platforms that offer affordable prints with the option to frame them.

Another great way to bring a luxe feel to your walls is through mirrors. Mirrors can open up a space, making it feel larger and more airy. Opt for large, statement mirrors with ornate frames or sleek modern designs, depending on the look you’re going for. A well-placed mirror can be a beautiful focal point in any room, adding both functionality and style.

Additionally, consider wall-mounted sculptures or decorative wall panels to bring some texture and dimension to your walls. These kinds of wall features can give your space an artistic, high-end feel, elevating the look of a room without a huge investment.

5. Use Metallic Accents

Moving on to tip number five: incorporating metallic accents. A great way to add a touch of luxury to your space is by incorporating metallics, such as gold, silver, or brass, into your decor. Metallic accents can instantly elevate the design of a room by adding an element of sophistication and glamour. Whether it’s through furniture, accessories, or small details, the subtle shine of metallics gives off a high-end vibe.

Consider using metallic furniture pieces like a gold-framed coffee table, silver lamp bases, or a brass side table to make your room feel more luxurious. If you prefer smaller accents, metallic picture frames, candle holders, and decorative trays are an easy way to introduce a bit of shine into your space without overwhelming it.

Another way to use metallics is through textiles. Look for throws, pillows, or curtains that have metallic threads woven into the fabric, which will add a touch of shimmer and richness to your space. Even adding a few metallic decorative objects, like vases or sculptures, can make a big impact.

One important thing to keep in mind when incorporating metallics is balance. While gold or silver accents can add elegance, too many metallics in one room can make it feel overdone or tacky. The key is moderation—use metallics sparingly and mix them with other materials like wood, leather, or fabrics to create a harmonious and elegant look.

6. Upgrade Your Hardware and Fixtures

Next, let’s move on to tip number six: upgrading your hardware and fixtures. Small changes like swapping out basic hardware can have a huge impact on the overall look of your space. This includes cabinet handles, doorknobs, light fixtures, faucets, and even towel bars. Upgrading these items is a relatively inexpensive way to make your home feel more luxurious without the need for a complete renovation.

Start by replacing outdated or builder-grade hardware with more elegant, high-end options. For example, opt for brushed gold, polished chrome, or matte black finishes for cabinet handles or drawer pulls. These sleek finishes not only look more sophisticated but also add a sense of attention to detail that gives your home an upscale feel. Similarly, swapping out basic light fixtures with statement pendant lights, chandeliers, or sconces can elevate the look of any room instantly.

In bathrooms and kitchens, upgrading faucets to ones with modern or vintage-inspired designs can also give these spaces a more luxurious vibe. Consider choosing faucets with unique finishes like brushed nickel, gold, or copper for an elegant look that complements the rest of your design.

Even small changes, like replacing old light switch plates with stylish covers, can make a significant difference. The more thoughtfully designed these small elements are, the more cohesive and polished your entire home will look.

7. Incorporating Greenery and Plants

Now, let’s move on to greenery and plants. One of the simplest and most effective ways to make any room feel more luxurious is by incorporating plants into your decor. Not only do plants bring a fresh, natural element into your home, but they also help improve air quality, which makes the environment feel more inviting and healthy.

For a more sophisticated look, choose plants with architectural shapes or large, statement-making varieties. Think about adding a tall fiddle leaf fig tree, a snake plant with sleek lines, or a dramatic monstera plant to your living space. These types of plants can fill an empty corner and give the room a sense of height and depth. Additionally, larger plants help anchor a space, creating a grounded, luxurious feel.

8. Creating a Cohesive Color Scheme

Next is creating a cohesive colour scheme. One of the easiest ways to give your home a luxurious feel is by establishing a cohesive colour palette throughout your space. A carefully chosen colour scheme can make any room feel more polished and intentional, which is a hallmark of high-end design. By sticking to a specific set of colours, you can create harmony and balance that ties all the elements of your decor together.

Start with neutral tones as your base—shades like white, beige, gray, and taupe provide a sophisticated backdrop that allows other design elements to shine. Neutral walls and furniture can help create a calm, inviting atmosphere, making the space feel larger and more serene.

9. Investing in Quality Furniture

Now let’s talk about investing in quality furniture. While it’s tempting to opt for budget-friendly options when furnishing your home, investing in a few key pieces of high-quality furniture can make a world of difference in how luxurious your space feels. Quality furniture is built to last and often features timeless designs that can elevate the entire room.

Start with the foundational pieces, such as a well-crafted sofa, dining table, or bed frame. Look for sturdy materials like hardwood for furniture frames, which not only ensure longevity but also add a sense of refinement. A luxurious sofa with durable upholstery in a rich fabric like velvet, linen, or leather can be the centrepiece of your living room, giving it a polished, sophisticated feel.

10. Creating a Luxurious Scented Atmosphere

Finally, let’s talk about the scent of your space. One often overlooked but crucial aspect of creating a luxurious home is the atmosphere, and scent plays a significant role in this. A beautifully scented room can make a space feel more inviting, comfortable, and, yes, luxurious.

Start by investing in high-quality candles, essential oils, or room sprays. Choose fragrances that are rich, calming, and sophisticated. Scents like lavender, vanilla, sandalwood, and citrus not only create a pleasant ambience but can also add an element of luxury. Luxury candles, especially those made with natural wax and premium fragrances, can elevate the overall atmosphere of your space while also serving as a stylish decor item.

Conclusion

These ten decorating tips will help you transform your home into a space that feels luxurious and inviting without breaking the bank. From layering window treatments and choosing high-quality textiles to adding art and using metallic accents, each detail plays a role in creating a more sophisticated and stylish environment.

Remember, luxury doesn’t always mean spending a lot of money. It’s about paying attention to the details, making thoughtful design choices, and curating pieces that elevate your space.
